Hemingway knew this well. Life breaks us all, he once wrote. But, he also helpfully pointed to the fact that some people grow at the broken places. God, evidently, has created us all with resilience and armed us with built-in shock-absorbing devices. One such device is humour and laughter. Scriptures puts it well for us. There is \u201ca season for everything, and a time for every matter under heaven\u201d. So there is &#8220;a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance&#8221; [Ecclesiastes 3:4] .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laughter, it is said, is the best medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are many health benefits in humour and laughter, we are told.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the deadly serious business of teaching dogmatic theology, our former professor at Leuven, Belgium, Professor Hermen-Emiel Mertens, would extol the virtues of adding humour to theology. We laugh or smile at mimicries and we laugh at little children&#8217;s actions because they mimic adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maria Liu, our dear friend from Inner Mongolia, has seen more than the average share of ups and downs in her life and in the lives of loved ones. Now residing in the Netherlands where she is a professor of dentistry, Maria has sent us a marvelous slide show. It came in Chinese calligraphy set against an ever-changing beautiful backdrop \u2013 now of nature, now of interior d\u00e9cor, and now of colourful butterflies\u2026 Endlessly, pictures of breath-taking beauty change with each frame, to accompany and complement the calligraphy and to tickle your imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They are so beautiful that we decided to at least have the words translated and shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Titled \u201cA Humorous Look at the Year of the Rabbit\u201d, the slide show features <em>a new vision<\/em> of one centre, two basics, three forgets, four haves, five musts, and six must-nots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>One Centre<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Let health be the one centre of all things.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>Two Basics<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Give all things a little bit more cavalier treatment.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>See all things a little bit less clearly.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>Three Forgets<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Forget your age.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Forget your past.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Forget your wounds.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>Four Haves<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Have a soul-mate.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Have a flourishing career.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Have a warm home.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>However weak or strong you may be, have someone who truly loves you.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>Five Musts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must sing.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must dance.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must laugh.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must be cavalier.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must be accommodating.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u25a1 <strong>Six Must-Nots<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not eat only when you are hungry.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not drink only when you are thirsty.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not sleep only when you are sleepy.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not rest only when you are tired.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not get a medical check-up only when you are sick.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>You must not regret only when you are old.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So go tell your loved ones now, to mind their physical health as well as their inner well being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For inner health, let your life be filled with laughter, fun and humour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A humorous person teases out laughter, banishes your sorrow, lightens your mood, and eases the pressure of competitive living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Health benefits in humour and laughter?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without humour, life is like a flowerless spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The secret source of humour is laughter, not sorrow and pain. So long as we are still alive, we must maintain humour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So try this little story for humour.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>A pretty lady, all dressed up beautiful and sexy, got out of the taxi but forgot to take along her camera on the back seat.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">Seeing the camera, the taxi driver instantly rolled down the window, stuck his neck out, and screamed loudly after her, \u201c<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">\u5c0f\u59d0<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">,<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">\u4f60<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">\u68a0<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">\u6a5f<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px;\">!\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Properly translated, all that the driver was shouting was, \u201cMiss, your camera!\u201d But, as anyone who knows any Chinese can tell you, the cruel thing about the Chinese language is that you can have different words that sound the same, but are miles apart in meaning. The difference in meaning in some cases can be really embarrassing when used in the wrong contexts!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em>In this case, instead of hearing \u201cMiss, your camera!\u201d, the lady heard \u201cMiss, you are like a chicken!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Now that is a nasty thing to say to a lady who is dressed up all pretty and sexy.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>On hearing that, the lady turned livid. She swung around and cursed with all her might, \u201cYou son of a bitch, you &#8211; you are like a duck!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oh dear! In Chinese, that \u201cchicken\u201d and \u201cduck\u201d reference takes on yet a deeper meaning. Just as the \u201cchicken\u201d reference assumes the connotation of a prostitute, the \u201cduck\u201d reference assigns the driver to the role of a pimp! She has scored a nasty equalizer on him, so to speak. Poor fellow. He\u2019s just a simple cab-driver doing an honest day\u2019s work, and right now simply trying to return a camera a customer has mindlessly left behind.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Incensed by the lady\u2019s attitude, the nasty reference she made about him, and his good deed scorned, the driver sped off in utter disgust.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Then, suddenly realizing that she had left her camera in the taxi, the lady ran after it in her high heels, screaming all the way, \u201cSir, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">my<\/span> camera, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">my<\/span> camera!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Now translate that! As you do so, imagine that you are standing at the sidewalk watching all that unfold before your very eyes and hearing the pretty lady shouting all that \u201ccamera\u201d stuff \u2013 in reference to herself!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffangiegoh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/laughter-calvin-and-hobbes.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-864\" title=\"laughter- calvin and hobbes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jeffangiegoh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/laughter-calvin-and-hobbes-282x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"459\" \/>\u00a0<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mother\/father-daughter\/son laughing their silly heads off under an old durian tree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We wish all our friends in Sabah and Sarawak a blissful festival season!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Copyright \u00a9 Dr. Jeffrey &amp; Angie Goh, June 2012.
