Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hopes and happiness. The idol may be a material object or a person, a god invented by human fear or imagination, or a philosophical system. Whatever it is, it will govern the human thoughts and actions, but it will be something less than the true God. And it will be very consequential because that on which we focus our attention and attach our allegiance will grow to dominate us (Psalm 115:48).

In the leading Exodus narrative of the Old Testament, no sooner had the Israelites been miraculously delivered from Egypt, than they made a golden calf – something tangible and therefore ‘easier’ for them to worship. It was a replacement, not a representation of the Lord. Through Moses, God blasted such blatant idolatry. So the first of the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20:3 (and Deuteronomy 5:6) says: “You shall have no other gods before me.” Emphasizing exclusive devotion, worship, and love, this commandment forbids idols and anything else that humans choose to place above God in their lives. This is the foundation for the most important spiritual rule taught by Christ, and the first and foremost principle for Christian living, namely, to love God with all one’s heart, mind and soul.

Through prophet Isaiah, God’s adamant message reads: “I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols” (Isaiah 42:8). God will not be satisfied with anything less than the allegiance of the whole world. Idolatry is a prison, a kind of blindness; God wants to set us free from all such forms of bondage.

Clearly, “idols” are not confined to mere tangible objects like the golden calf; rather, there are a very large number of possible idols. Perhaps more subtle in developed countries, there are more subtle forces at work against our Christian faith, such as the infiltration of various “New Age” beliefs and practices. Martin Luther King Jr. sees the world as being awash in “little gods” that seek our affection. In particular, he stresses that denying false loves was just as important as embracing genuine love: it is crucial to carefully distinguish God, who is beyond the world, who loves us and who is deserving of our love, from worldly idols. We must work on ourselves in order to be rightly oriented towards justice. Beautiful writings may be fueled not by love but by lovelessness, by racism and homophobia.

Without doubt, the most prevalent idol in contemporary times is money (Matthew 6:24). Wealth is something difficult to renounce altogether because it’s a necessary part of life. Yet, the pull of money is insidious and it easily captures a higher priority than worshipping or serving God. St Paul explains the knock-on effects on our behaviour well:

“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” (I Timothy 6:9,10).ver praised. Amen.” (Romans 1:21,25)

In sum, [a] idolatry manifests in different forms of bondage and is certainly not confined to mere tangible idol-worship (see, for example, six things in Proverbs 6:16-19, “stubbornness” in 1 Sam 15:23, putting “stuffs” ahead of God in Lk 17: 26-37); (b) God hates idolatry (Deut 6:13-15) because idols in a person’s life repudiates, renounces and replaces God; (c) do not combine Christianity with other religions or belief systems and expect our relationship with God to be unaffected (I Cor 10:14-22). Singapore Cardinal William Goh’s short reflection is germane in this context:

The modern idols of our time are no longer carved from stone or wood but are found in the pursuits of relativism, materialism, pleasure, pragmatism, power, and status. These false gods promise happiness but ultimately leave us empty, anxious, and enslaved. When we allow worldly success or possessions to define us, we lose sight of eternal values and the true source of life and love – God Himself. Only by detaching from these passing idols and turning our hearts toward God can we find lasting peace, joy, and freedom.

On Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit and Eternal Sin: expand our concept

The Markan passage in 3:22-30 cited above is significant for identifying what a blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is. In Mark: The Gospel of Service, we explained in part:

The unforgivable blasphemy (3:28-30) is to attribute Jesus’ works to an unclean spirit rather than to the Holy Spirit. In works of healing and exorcism, the Son of God is engaged in battle with the forces of Satan. A man observing all this is not just being blind when evil to him is good and good evil, he actually looks on the goodness of God and calls it the evil of Satan. He refuses the guidance of God’s Spirit that reveals God‘s truth and enables humanity to recognize the truth when they see it. In such a case, the man is no longer able to seek forgiveness and risks eternal judgment. As this Beelzebul incident involved the scribes who were informed and educated religious leaders, we must note the risk that intellectual ability may equally aid or deflect faith and the challenge of gospel truth.

Catholics doing minimal research will however go on and read that Church Fathers considered additional interpretations other than it being to attribute the Holy Spirit’s works to Satan. St Thomas Aquinas lists six sins that go against the Holy Spirit, all basically having to do with impenitence and obstinacy, with heart hardened by clinging to sin. St Augustine himself had remarked that this Markan passage is one of the more difficult passages of Scripture.

Unforgivability of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit removes entrance to means of salvation. Still, God can work miracles. The Catechism of Trent thus indicates that the Church believes no offence, however serious, cannot be taken away by Baptism, or absolved in Confession. No one, however wicked and guilty, has no hope. Commenting on “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin,” the Catechism states, “There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss” (#1864). Once we are in a position where we have closed our minds to God’s presence in our lives, how can God reach us?

Insisting that “the gates of forgiveness should always be open to anyone who turns away from sin,” The Catholic Church thus adopts St Augustine’s view: only dying unrepentant for one’s sins is the only unforgivable sin. What the Catechism of the Catholic Church underlines in this regard is that while no sin is absolutely “unforgivable”, some sins represent a deliberate refusal to repent and accept the infinite mercy of God. Damnation is precisely definitive separation from God, freely chosen by the human person and confirmed with death that seals one’s choice for ever.
